Abstract:
One interpretation of homotopy theory is that it is an enhanced version of arithmetic which “remembers” combinatorics and symmetry. I will demonstrate this philosophy concretely by explaining several situations where the floor and ceiling functions appear: Legendre’s formula and its q-analogue; representation theory of S^1; K-theory of truncated polynomial algebras; and equivariant homotopy theory. I will also give some observations and conjectures on how these examples are all related.
